Birthday Celebration
September 26, 2007 by Melanee.
I enjoyed myself at Kevin’s 50th birthday party. Family and friends gathered. We talked and ate. We even sang Happy Birthday and ate carrot cake, Kev’s favorite. Thanks so much everyone for coming and celebrating. One friend said we really need to have a water fight to make it just what Kev would want. I somehow was able to survive all of the water fights in the past that Kev would participate in, except at Girl’s Camp. Kev would have started a water fight right after the suggestion. He would have so much fun. Oh well…maybe someday.

Infection Update
September 26, 2007 by Mallory.
So when I went to the hospital, they told me that it wasn’t an abscess. I went to the doctor today to get a check up and see how it’s healing and everything. You know what he told me? “I think this is a really bad abscess.” He even got another doctor and got a second opinion. Yeah…it was a really big abscess. You know what I wanna scream at the hospital doctors? I WAS RIGHT!!!!!! So they cut me open and oozed me out (there was about a cup of junk in there) and he gave me a prescription for percoset and told me not to go to work for the next couple days. So there we go. It’s slowly getting better though, which is good. Yay for modern medicine!

Eventful weekend
September 23, 2007 by Mallory.
This past week has been a bit crazy, with the weekend topping it off. In the beginning of the week, Wendell got sick with a cold/cough thing that wasn’t too fun. I thought I had an abscess under my arm also. I would try to get some of the junk out of it once in a while so that I wouldn’t have to go to the doctor (Our insurance doesn’t kick in until October.) Throughout the week, I was getting worse and worse and my arm was hurting more and more. By Thursday, I was taking 3 ibuprofen every 4 hours. So on Thursday, I called my Relief Society president and asked her if she knew of any good doctors around, and she gave me one; so I promptly made an appointment with them to take care of this thing on/under my arm, but the doctor that took care of all this stuff wouldn’t be in until Monday, so I just made it for Monday. Friday, it got even worse and it was looking really bad, so we decided to just go to a walk-in clinic first thing Saturday morning. We went there and they said, “Oh…you need to go to the hospital.” Great. So we went to the hospital and everyone that saw it would say, “Wow, that’s really red.” or “Wow, that’s really big.” I got there, they stuck me and took some of my blood for some tests. Then they gave me IV antibiotics and took an ultrasound of my arm/veins just to make sure that the infection didn’t clog/block any of my veins. They told me that this wasn’t an abscess at all, but it was cellulitis. They think that it started at my gland or something like that. They said that some fluid was going into my veins, but it wasn’t clogged. They gave me 2 prescriptions for antibiotics and 1 for pain. Unfortunately, the pain medication they gave me makes me dizzy and drowsy, but hey, it gets rid of the pain, right? But wait…there’s more. I read the paper that they gave to me on the medications and it said that one of them is best when eaten on an empty stomach, but if it causes and upset stomach, you may eat it with food. I need to take it every 12 hours and I can’t take it with dairy, unless I take it an hour before or 2 hours after. So I decided that I will wake up at 5:00 in the morning to take it and then just take my other one with food. So I took it at 5 and went back to sleep. We have church at 8:00, so I woke up at around 6:00 to get ready. Unfortunately, I felt really sick and I threw up twice….yuck. I don’t know how people can be bulimic because I HATE throwing up with every fiber of my being. Luckily, I don’t think I threw up the pill that I took, but I still felt pretty lousy going to church. I felt much better by the end of church, but it has been crazy and a bit painful, but it should all be ok. I can tell that things are getting better, so hopefully it’ll get better quickly so that I don’t have to be miserable while I teach. Wendell is almost better. He still has a little cough, but nothing too bad. Well there you have it!

It is really lousy to be sick on your daughter’s 3 birthday while your husband is in TX.

Happy 50th
September 19, 2007 by Melanee.
Kev would have turned 50 today. We also will celebrate Anya’s third birthday tomorrow.
I am looking forward to his birthday celebration on Saturday, September 22nd. Remember that everyone is invited. Please scroll down to the “You’re Invited” entry to get the details.
Memories of his birthday are of:
Asking him what he wanted for his birthday. His answer would be nothing we can afford. Pants, shirts, ties, or sweaters were always the norm for his gift. I tried to make his favorite meal of chicken and dumplings one time. He confessed that it did not taste like his grandmother’s special dish. I tried.
His 40th was celebrated at a youth function we did at our church. It was a movie and pizza night. Our church had a full kitchen with pizza oven before it was renovated. We had about 100 youth there making pizza and watching The Three Stooges, and Laural and Hardy movies. I brought out the cake and we all sang Happy Birthday to him.
I know what he would have be done on his birthday today. Paddling down a river with his buddy, Scott, and maybe a few more friends because it is such a spectacular day today.
Happy Birthday Kev!

7 down…
September 17, 2007 by Mallory.
I haven’t written in a little while, so I thought that I would update a little bit. Wendell has finally started school…and our apartment is DEFINITELY a lot messier. But we have been keeping up with our dishes! But everywhere else is a disaster. We are both just so busy and tired that nothing gets cleaned except for the kitchen. When we get home, we either just relax or study/plan. It’s a bit crazy, but I think we’re handling it really well. We’re still really happy and things are good.
As for my teaching, it’s a bit interesting. One of my students transferred to another class because he was supposed to be in another class to begin with. I still had 5 REALLY tough kids and I really couldn’t get any teaching done. Then my principal comes up to me and tells me that there’s fourth grade class that has only 17 students in it, so she made a decision to take 5 of my students and put them in that class as a 3/4 split class. So she tells me, “Pick any 5 students you want.” My face lit up and I said, “Really??” So I chose the worst children that I had. (They’re great kids, just hard to handle..and me being a new teacher in a totally new culture, it made it pretty tough.) So then I had 15 students. Then today, I found out that one of my students is changing schools to be closer to home to make it easier for his mom. So now I have 14! I’ve lost a third of my class! If it keeps going like this, I’m not gonna have any students left by the end of the year! But I like it. It makes it a lot easier to teach and I can actually get some things done. I love teaching. I’m learning to love it more and more. They are great kids and I love them to death! It’s also interesting how it seems like students like you more when they are out of your class than in your class. All of my students that changed classes come in every morning to say hi. It’s fun. I can deal with that, but I’m glad that they’re not in my class anymore. But I still love them.
Besides those things, not much is happening. Our car is still running (we’re at 194,000!) We were thinking about getting another car, but Wendell’s school is on the way to mine, so I just drop him off and pick him up. It’s actually been working really well. Things have been great! Until next time!

Exciting Sunday
September 16, 2007 by Leah.
So the downside to being a military wife is that they leave. (Don’t feel bad it’s in the job description, if I couldn’t handle I wouldn’t have married him.) Anyway today Ed left only for a week and a half, but this is the first time he has left since I have had 2 kids. What a start to the week. Let me fill you in. Yesterday we decided that we wanted to move all the bedrooms around. It took us pretty much all day. Then Ed made dinner and I finished tidying up. I got a call from my Mom saying that Marlene had missed her flight so could we go get her and let her hang out at our house instead of having her be alone in big bad Philly and bring her back to the airport in the am. Of course I said yes, I had to bring Ed to the airport in the morning anyway. We leave and drive to the airport get Marlene and come home. I am getting the kids ready for bed. Anya is in her room about to get a pull-up and pajamas when she starts making a strange noise. It took me a second to realize she was gagging! Run to the bathroom, we didn’t make it. So I throw her in the shower and clean up the mess, get her pajamas on and am reading her stories in bed when she does it again. This time we made it. She continued to be sick all night. For the first time in years Kevin slept longer than Anya. So now it is 4:30 am. I am getting ready to take Marlene and Ed to the airport. Marlene has a 6:30am flight and Ed’s is at 9:30. Anya got sick in the car on the way to the airport. Good thing a brought a pukie-bucket! We drop her off and Ed realized that he forgot part of his uniform, so back home we go so he doesn’t have to buy it in TX. Now I am driving home by my self with the 2 kids who are sleeping in the back. Just as I am getting on the Walt Whitman Bridge I hear gagging in the back seat. I have learned that I can drive across a bridge while holding a bucket for Anya to throw up in. I do not recommend it, if you can pull over you should. Just as I get off the highway Kevin wakes up and decides that he is starving so now it is very loud. We get home and relax on the couch and that is pretty much where we have been all day. Anya is feeling better; I think she ate something yucky! So my only thought is I hope this is the low point of my week and a half and it gets better from here. Now only if Little Man will stay asleep long enough for me to can the tomatoes that have been in my fridge for a week!

Your invited
September 14, 2007 by Melanee.
My husband, Kevin, would have turned the Big 5-0 next week.
I would like to invite everyone who has some time on Saturday, September 22nd to celebrate his life. The pavillion at Cheshire Park will be the gathering place 12 noon to 4 pm. We will be celebrating with a homestyle picnic and some birthday cake. Please bring a dish for the common table. I would love if you can make it and enjoy a couple hours of some smiles, stories, and laughter in true Kevin style.

Hmm
September 9, 2007 by Marlene.
As you know, Dad’s blog was very influential and very well known as well. It helped out many people including complete strangers who we will probably never know. After Dad passed we started talking about getting the blog published. Auntie Ellen said that she would like to see me do a bit of a narrative to fill in the gaps between the entries. I started doing a couple here and there and it’s a bit hard. It’s difficult not to be repetitive and still think of all the future doodads I’d still have to write for the future entries. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing and I love doing this. It can just be a bit tricky when I don’t know exactly what is wanted.
Even if the blog doesn’t get published, I like reading through Dad’s blog and getting to know him a bit better and reflecting on those times passed. Actually, I feel like I’ve been getting to know Dad more now than I was before. I read his books now and it explains a lot of his mindset. He had a lot of books that help you become a better person and live a fuller life, mostly through helping and being aware of other people. Those of you who knew Dad can attest to that attribute.
Well I’ll probably keep on writing and hopefully something good will turn up, maybe not. Either way, I like doing it so why not?
